How Hazel teletherapy works

All Hazel teletherapy sessions are conducted virtually via any smartphone, tablet, or computer that connects to WiFi. Sessions occur at school or home, depending on your school district’s program and family preference. The Hazel teletherapy program is a short-term service.

Initial intake assessment

~75 minutes – The intake session is your child’s first appointment with a Hazel therapist. During the session, the therapist will work to understand your child’s unique mental health needs.

As the guardian, you are expected to participate in this session virtually for at least the first 30 minutes.

Hazel sessions, including the intake must occur in a location with a physical address. Please do not join the intake session from a moving vehicle.

Weekly therapy sessions

~45 minutes – After intake, your child can look forward to weekly counseling sessions, typically lasting six weeks to two months, subject to clinical judgment.

Hazel’s therapists lead students through an evidence-based treatment plan customized to their unique needs.

Care coordination

If the therapist refers your child to longer-term mental health support following the therapy program, Hazel Health can help guide you through connecting with resources in your community.

Connect your child to therapy by making a referral

  1. Visit hazel.co/get-hazel, enter your school district, and confirm that your school offers Hazel Health services
  2. Create an account
  3. Fill out and submit consent for your student within your account
  4. Click "request teletherapy" to complete steps required to make a referral
  5. Once prompted, sign up for an enrollment call to schedule an intake and verify insurance information; otherwise, a Hazel Health representative will contact you within 2 business days

Through your account you can reschedule visits, send a message to Hazel, view upcoming appointments, and join scheduled therapy visits.

Therapy sessions at school or at home

For at-home sessions, an adult must be at home with your child in case of an emergency.

Guardians can connect to sessions by logging into their account.

Best practices for at-home virtual therapy:
  • Find a quiet place with no distractions
  • Make sure your WiFi connection is strong
  • Test your camera and microphone before the visit
  • Try to join the visit 15 minutes before your appointment to ensure you do not have issues; reference our how to join a visit guide for detailed directions
  • Still unable to connect? Try restarting, using a different device, or referencing our troubleshooting guide

A trained school staff member will help your child initiate the intake visit on the secure Hazel iPad. They will maintain ‘line of sight’ in case of an emergency while honoring the student’s privacy. Guardians can connect to the intake sessions by logging into their account.

The trained school staff member will help your child initiate the visit in a secure location for ongoing sessions.

How to cancel or re-schedule a therapy appointment

To help us serve another child, please call Hazel at 1-888-541-7063 at least 24 hours before the scheduled session to cancel or reschedule.

We will work with you to find a convenient time for your child’s rescheduled visit, but care may be delayed, and preferred time slots may not be available.

By canceling or rescheduling 24 hours in advance, you enable us to help another family.

Services will be discontinued, and the student will be asked to re-enroll at a later day if that student has:

  • 2 consecutive at-home visits canceled or rescheduled fewer than 24 hours in advance of the originally scheduled time OR
  • 3 total at-home visits canceled or rescheduled fewer than 24 hours in advance of the originally scheduled time OR‍
  • 1 week has elapsed since the date of a missed intake/counseling session, and no guardian has followed up

At a later date, students may request re-enrollment in the program as long as they renew a commitment to attending sessions as scheduled.

Insurance information

A Hazel Health representative will contact you directly to provide an overview of services and work with you to schedule an intake visit.

After the call, the representative will send a text message to you asking you to submit your child’s insurance card. Please follow the link in the text message to upload a picture of your child’s insurance card at your earliest convenience.

We recognize that not everyone has insurance and therefore do not require insurance if you do not have coverage.

There is no out-of-pocket cost for Hazel Health services. Collecting insurance information from those who are covered allows us to ensure all students are seen, heard, and cared for regardless of insurance status.
